GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The stage is set for the 2017 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament Championship after Davenport defeated Lawrence Tech 76-64 and Siena Heights went on the road to win 72-69 at Indiana Tech on Saturday in the semifinals. The third-seeded Saints (24-8) travel to the top-seed Panthers (29-3) on Monday, February 27 for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
Lawrence Tech and Davenport played a spirited first half as the Blue Devils led 31-28 at the break. Like much of this season, the Panthers proved to be a second half team as they outscored the Blue Devils 19-14 in the third and 29-19 in the fourth to pull ahead to the 12-point victory.
Lawrence Tech led for more time total in the contest but it was great defense in the second half by Davenport holding the Blue Devils to 15-of-44 (.341) from the floor including 2-of-11 behind the arc. DU shot 44.7 percent in the second half and were 11-of-12 at the charity stripe.
Emily Severn scored 16 of her team-high 19 points in the second half and also grabbed six rebounds for the contest.
Chri Carter performed at a high level with 10 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in 26 minutes with just one turnover. Carter set a season-high in rebounds and it was her first double-double of the season.
Mallory Sewell scored 14 points on 7-of-12 from the floor and chipped in three rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
Jenna Falkenberg scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds in 17 minutes. She also led the team with three blocks and went 6-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-4 at the free throw line.
The Panthers did a great job of not fouling with just 11 fouls as LTU shot 2-of-3 at the foul line for the game. DU shot 16-of-18 as a team including 9-of-10 in the fourth quarter. Lawrence Tech led by as many as nine points in the second quarter before holding onto a three-point halftime lead. The Panthers opened up the third quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 34-31 lead after a Severn jumper.
The Blue Devils then scored the next nine points to lead 40-34 after an Allison Kitchen layup. DU closed out the final 3:18 of the quarter on an 8-0 run to lead 47-45 after a three by Severn regained the lead. The Panthers led the entire fourth quarter building an eight-point lead with 6:46 left on a Sewell layup. LTU cut the lead down to three on two occasions but with 3:48 remaining the lead never got back to within one possession. DU scored the final seven points of the game in the last 48 seconds making their last seven free throws.
