GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The atmosphere was hyped for Senior Day on Saturday and the women's basketball team held off Lourdes 76-64 to capture the program's 11th straight Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference regular season championship. The Panthers improved to 24-2 overall and 18-0 in the WHAC and can clinch the outright title with one more win in the final four games of the regular season.
Lourdes was drubbed by Davenport in the earlier meeting in Sylvania (99-39) back on December 17, but held their own in this one. Despite their best efforts, Lourdes has now lost all 12 meetings against the Panthers in series history.
Davenport opened up a 21-9 lead after the first quarter as they shot 36.8 percent. The team went cold in the second quarter making just 2-of-15 from the floor. DU still led 29-20 at halftime and then increased their offense in the second half with 22 points in the third and 25 points in the fourth. Lourdes trailed just 51-45 heading into the fourth, but the Panthers had their highest scoring quarter of the game and shot 52.9 percent and were 7-of-9 at the foul line in the final 10 minutes.
Lourdes shot 37.1 percent for the game and went just 1-of-11 behind the arc. Davenport made a living at the free throw line going 26-of-33 while the Grey Wolves finished 11-of-16. DU scored 30 points off turnovers which was a huge edge over Lourdes who had 15. Senior
Mallory Sewell finished with a game-high and career-high 21 points and had the second-best free throw day in school history going 11-of-11. She also had eight rebounds and was in double figures in scoring for the first time in the last six games.
Senior
Molly Babbs had her sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. She grabbed that 10th rebound on the last miss of the game by Lourdes. Babbs also led the team with four steals. Senior
Chri Carter did not score but had four assists and four rebounds in 20 minutes. Sophomore
Michaela Faber produced 13 points (4-of-4 FG, 5-of-6 FT) off the bench in nine minutes. Junior
Hannah Wilkerson scored 10 points in 20 minutes.
"I'm proud of how our team has competed thus far this season," said head coach
Robyn Scherr-Wells. "The girls just find a way to win. We will celebrate this win today, but we have more games to play. We have set big goals for ourselves this season and we still have a lot to accomplish starting with the next game at home against Madonna."
