GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team remained undefeated at home this season (10-0) with a 4-1 win over Spring Arbor University on Tuesday. The Panthers (21-10) were sluggish at the plate through the first five innings but then scored four runs in their final three at-bats for the victory.
Spring Arbor got on the board first in the top of the fourth off
Justin Palmbos. Palmbos entered in the third inning and stranded a runner in scoring position after a leadoff error and a sacrifice bunt. The Cougars scratched across a run with two outs in the fourth as they had runners on first and third and got the Panthers to throw out the runner between first and second while the runner from third scored.
DU then kept the Cougars off the board over the final five innings and themselves began to find some offense with a single run in the sixth, two more in the seventh and one more in the eighth. Davenport put runners on first and third with no outs in the sixth and
Nolan Page had a RBI fielder's choice to tie it at 1-1.
Joe Romence entered in the bottom of the seventh for Spring Arbor and would allow the final three runs although only one was earned. Both runs in the seventh were aided by a passed ball.
Anthony DiPonio led off with a triple to right and
Cameron Bair drew a walk to set up runners on the corners. DiPonio scored the winning run and pinch runner
Jacob Buchberger took second and third on the dreaded passed ball by the Cougars.
Matt Hoge then had a suicide squeeze bunt to score Buchberger with the third run.
In the eighth inning, Buchberger walked to start the inning and stole second. Page was hit by a pitch and then both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Romence then uncorked another wild pitch to allow Buchberger to score the fourth run. Romence then stranded Page at third with two pop-outs and a fly ball.
Jonathan Cheshire (3-3) got the win as the fourth pitcher of the game. He went 3.2 innings of no-hit ball and struck out five in 51 pitches (33 strikes). DU only mustered four hits but did have four stolen bases.
