GLENDALE, Colo. - The Davenport men's rugby 7s had a glorious run to the bronze medal at the 2017 USA Rugby national 7s tournament held at Infinity Park over the weekend. The Panthers went 3-0 in pool play which advanced them into the quarterfinals and a date with Florida International. FIU put up a good fight but DU won the match 12-7 to put them in the semifinals against Saint Mary's College (Calif.). The Gaels were a force to be reckoned with as they won the match 40-12 to put DU into the third place match and a rematch with Utah from pool play. The team won 22-12 which was the identical score in pool play to bring the bronze back to Grand Rapids.
Davenport University finished runner-up in 2015 and fourth at last year's event, and played in a second consecutive Bronze Final Sunday after conceding six tries to Saint Mary's in the Semifinals. The Panthers took it to University of Utah early, building a two-try lead before seeing out the 22-12 final for the medal.
