Panthers thrive in new venture

DU (4-1) beat Ashland 5-0 in first-ever GLIAC match on Friday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport men's soccer team got off to a great start as a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) with a 5-0 win over visiting Ashland (3-1, 0-1) on Friday night. The Panthers have won three straight matches and improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the new conference. Junior Brogan Shrimpton seemingly could not get much hotter, but he did just that with a career-high four goals and one assist. He now ranks second in school history with nine points and four goals in a match. He raised his season total to 12 which already ties for seventh in school history just five matches into the season.

After the teams felt each other out in the first 20 minutes, Davenport started to find cracks in the foundation of the Ashland defense. The first goal by Shrimpton at 20:23 was a tremendous goal as he hit the ball half volley with authority from 25 yards to the top right corner with an assist by Daire O'Riordan. Just over seven minutes later it was Jovanni Garcia scoring his second of the season from Shrimpton. Garcia took the ball on the close right wing and fired just under the crossbar from 10 yards.

Davenport took a 3-0 lead before the end of the first half with Shrimpton being in the right place after a rebound and pass from O'Riordan. He was in the middle of the field and scored from around 20 yards into the open net. He collected his third hat trick of the season at 46:36 as Carson Brinks made a great move down the far sideline and crossed the ball perfectly right in front as Shrimpton tapped it past the goal line. The final goal was at 87:47 as Shrimpton took a very long pass from Cam Cavanagh and moved to the right wing. He took a very sharp angle but managed to find the back of the net to conclude a magnificent performance.

Davenport dominated the stat sheet with 15 shots on goal and did not allow a shot on goal by the Eagles. The balance was evident as DU had 19 total shots with 10 in the first half and nine in the second half. Aaron Orban had a clean sheet without much of a challenge. The Panthers played a great match in terms of possession just keeping the ball away from Ashland before striking at the right moment. The team will host Tiffin (2-2-1, 1-0) on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in their next match.
