Second straight overtime game ends in 3-2 loss for the Panthers

CALEDONIA, Mich. – Davenport competed in their third GLIAC game of the season tonight against the Eagles of Ashland University. This was the second straight game for the Panthers that extra time was needed to determine a winner. Unfortunately, the Eagles were the first team to score during the overtime period, making them the immediate winners of the game. Davenport fought back from being one goal down during two separate occasions in the game. The 14 corner kicks by the Eagles proved to be a difference throughout the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ashland had a couple great scoring opportunities early in the game, with crosses that went across the box and were un-touched by the DU defense. The second cross found an Ashland player and she one-timed the ball into the net during the seventh minute of action. After the early goal Davenport picked up their defense and didn't let another goal in for another 58 minutes. The Panthers almost had a goal during the 34th minute of play. Lacey Chanady lined up for a corner kick and she found the head of Cassandra Bosworth who headed the ball at the net, the Eagles had a defender step up and kick the ball out of the net. Davenport went into halftime down 1-0.

In the second half a header by Imanie Richards hyped up the Davenport players. Alex Prout took a corner kick and Richards planted herself at the near post. Richards headed the ball into the net and tied the game 1-1 during the 50th minute. The game was getting a little physical shortly after the goal as Sabrina Stone and an Ashland player were given yellow cards. During an odd chain of events the Eagles got a header off of a corner kick during the 65th minute to take a 2-1 lead. Davenport needed a goal late to stay in the game and they got it from Roheema Bennett. Alayna Hilgendorf flicked the ball ahead with her head, Bennett took one touch with her left foot and placed the ball perfectly into the right side of the net on the ground. The game was tied 2-2 with less than five minutes to play. Neither team was able to score during the final minutes and overtime was needed.

During the overtime period the Panthers only had one scoring opportunity. A shot by Bennett went wide in the box just two and half minutes into the period. Ashland earned the game winning goal from Morgan Bittengle during minute six of the overtime period.
