Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Panthers battle the elements in 2-1 overtime loss to Parkside

Matt Whelan scored his fifth goal of the season in the 76th minute

CALEDONIA, Mich. - On a cold and rainy night at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex, the Davenport men's soccer team fought to the finish short-handed in a 2-1 overtime loss to Wisconsin-Parkside in GLIAC action.

After winning on the road earlier this season, the Panthers were looking to sweep the season series with the Rangers who entered the match tied with Saginaw Valley State atop the GLIAC standings. It was a feverish pace throughout the match and both teams had an equal amount of possession.

The Rangers got the first break and took advantage for a 1-0 lead in the 73rd minute. Leki Prpa took a corner kick from the far side of the field and the ball got through several bodies and to the foot of Reyes Perez on the back side. Perez kicked low through traffic and scored his first of the season.

The Panthers got the tying goal in the 76th minute as Matt Whelan scored his fifth of the season. Jake Van Schie kicked a high ball into the box and Tyler Welch got his body on it and directed to Whelan. He then shot low and beat the keeper from about 20 yards. The match changed quickly however as Yovany Duran got his second yellow card of the match leaving DU with 10 men with just under 24 minutes left.

The Panthers still managed to play at a high rate but were dealt another blow when Brock Schultz got his second yellow card with 40 seconds left to leave the Panthers down two men. Each team had one shot on goal in overtime as Daire O'Riordan took a shot off a free kick in the 93rd minute. DU could not hold off the Rangers much longer as Burim Huseini scored his first of the season in the 95th minute to end it. He maneuvered through defenders and shot from 17 yards to the lower left corner.
