Panthers lose first game of the season at Northwood

Deondre Moore set school record with 86-yard touchdown catch in fourth quarter

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Davenport football team simply could not comeback for another win on Saturday at Northwood. The Panthers have had magic late in games this season, but made too made mistakes to overcome them in a 30-22 loss to the Timberwolves. Davenport lost for the first time this season (6-1, 3-1 GLIAC) due to a strong running game by Northwood. The Timberwolves rushed for 241 yards after DU had given up just 57.3 yards per game entering the contest. Northwood had a pair of rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter which opened up a big lead.

The Timberwolves struck first at the 1:30 mark of the first quarter. Christian Martinez rolled to his right and lobbed a pass to the middle of the field where Gary Landless made a catch and run for 46 yards and a 7-0 lead. After gaining 42 yards on 13 plays in the first quarter, Davenport got on the board with 13:31 in the second quarter. DU drove six plays in 77 yards as Keion Powers rushed for one yard to tie the game at 7 after the extra point by Chris Ahmed.

Northwood responded with a field goal on their next drive. Corey Burdgick had a 50-yard run from the NU 29 to the DU 21 before David Riser booted a 33-yarder for a 10-7 lead with 9:40 left in the quarter. The Timberwolves were driving again on their next drive into the red zone before Martinez was intercepted by Brian Williams at the DU 6. Williams returned it 33 yards for his fourth interception in two games against NU.

Davenport however gave it right back as William Gist busted off a 22-yard run into NU territory but fumbled at the NU 40. Northwood took over the final drive of the first half at 1:36 and moved the ball to the DU 3 after a 15-yard pass interference. Northwood set up for a field goal try with four seconds to go, but faked it as Dimitri Abro carried to the goal line and fumbled on a hit by Jamal Veazey. The ball went into the end zone and Landless jumped on it for the touchdown. Riser connected on the PAT and DU trailed 17-7 at the break.

Neither team scored in the third quarter but DU muffed a punt snap before holding on a goal-line stand to start the quarter. Then Deondre Moore fumbled midway through the quarter to stall another drive. The Davenport offense could not seem to find a rhythm with 75 yards in the quarter.

Despite the miscues, DU kept themselves in the game heading into the fourth quarter. Martinez fumbled at the DU 15 with 7:42 left and it was recovered by Daniel Jackson. Two plays later, Moore set a school record with an 86-yard touchdown grab from Haiden Majewski to make it 17-14. Moore took a sideline route and raced the final 55 yards to the end zone.

Northwood answered the score however with a touchdown of their own. The rushing of Burdgick and Abdul Levy got the ball down to the DU 13. Jake Vincent took a 10-yard pitch to the house on 3rd-and-7 with 4:05 to go for a 23-14 score after the missed PAT. DU could not convert on 4th-and-14 from their own 21 with 3:09 to go and NU took over on downs. Four plays later, Martinez followed his left guard for a four-yard touchdown run for a 30-14 lead with 1:36 on the clock.

DU had one more touchdown drive which culminated in a seven-yard TD run by Majewski and a two-point conversion pass to Amonte Gwinn with 29 seconds left. The onside kick was recovered by Northwood who knelt once to end the game at 30-22. Deion Powers led the defense with 12 tackles. C.J. Thornton had nine tackles including 2.5 tackles for loss. Jackson had a career-high eight tackles and a fumble recovery. Majewski entered the game completing over 60 percent of his passes this season but finished 12-for-26 for 195 yards. DU rushed 35 times for 139 yards for the game.
