Panthers dispatch of Bowling Green to remain unbeaten

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The men's rugby squad ran their overall record to 4-0 this fall under first-year head coach Lance Hohaia after a 43-5 win at Bowling Green on Saturday. It marked the third consecutive match that the Panthers have not allowed double-digit points to their opponent during the hot start. After two consecutive off weekends, DU was tested by a strong D1AA squad in the Falcons on a wet and slippery grass field.

Jaden Laing opened the scoring for Davenport with a powerful 15-meter run in the third minute of the game. Cedric Vakalahi scored next shrugging off two defenders to continue his try scoring feats of previous weeks. Mat De Villiers kicks a penalty goal in the 20th minute to take make it 17-0 for the Panthers. Brady Erlich had a fine game and received the last pass after a great team effort to score under the posts for a 24-0 lead. De Villiers scored next with an intercept try and the rout was on.

Mat had a great day with a personal tally of 18 points, scoring one try, slotting 5 out of 5 conversions and a penalty goal. That rounded out the first half with the score at 31-0 to DU. A number of changes were made by Davenport at the half to bring in some fresh legs. Bowling Green lifted their game in the second stanza and Davenport let themselves down with some ill discipline, which made it a tough second half for the away side. Logan Mate scored the first points of the second half with a great finish to a sweeping back line move. There were no points scored for the next 20 minutes. Davenport were put under immense pressure by Bowling Green with some relentless attack, but the commitment on defense was outstanding. Aaron Cummings scored in his first game back in Davenport colors in a number of months with 15 minutes left on the clock. Bowling Green had a huge amount of possession for the next 10 minutes and scored a nice try from a set piece with five minutes left in the game.

Story compliments of Lance Hohaia
