Late goal in double overtime leads to 2-1 loss against Purdue Northwest

Miguel Flores scored his third of the season late in second half

CALEDONIA, Mich. - It was another tough close loss on Wednesday for the Davenport men's soccer team in a 2-1 double overtime setback against Purdue Northwest. It was the second overtime loss of the season and fifth loss by one goal to show how close the margin of error can be at this level. The Pride played a style of defense first and then tried to counter attack when needed. Davenport kept possession for a large majority of the contest, but found few holes in the defense by the Pride.

The scenario got even more defensive because Purdue Northwest scored just 7:27 into the match. Isaiah Nieves took a turnover in DU's defensive end and found space in the middle of the field. He shot from around 26 yards and grazed the crossbar on a pinpoint goal. It was his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

The Pride managed to not allow a shot on goal until the 38th minute from Brogan Shrimpton. Shrimpton also then hit the crossbar in the 44th minute as DU totaled two shots on goal in the first half. Davenport did have a few more shots on goal in the second half, but none would have been considered quality scoring chances.

The pressure to keep the Panthers off the board finally showed in the 89th minute. Miguel Flores scored with 1:27 remaining in regulation with an assist from Daire O'Riordan. Flores took a short pass and carried into space before unleashing a shot from 20 yards into the lower right corner.

Brayden Texer had the best chance to end things in the first overtime. He came in behind the play at the far post from the left wing, but could not get a quick shot off. Bradley Brack slid over in time to make a save and create a corner kick. Purdue Northwest got the winning goal with 1:28 left in double overtime. Daniel Freedman got loose briefly after a pass from Matt Bahena. The ball bounced off the turf and Freedman got his head on the ball from about seven yards inside the right post.

Davenport and Purdue Northwest are now even at 2-4 in the GLIAC. DU held an 8-7 edge in shots on goal. Brack made seven saves for the Pride while Eric Riley had five saves for the Panthers.
