HOW IT HAPPENED
SET SCORES: 25-7, 26-24, 25-14
Davenport opened the match with a set that deflated the Pride's confidence. The Panthers took a 7-1 lead, forcing the Pride to take their first timeout, and then continued their strong play by going up 15-3 after a service ace by
Jenna Asper. Davenport had a four-point run and then later a five-point run, building up their lead to 24-6. The set-winning kill belonged to VanderHorst, assisted by
Sydney Tracer.
The second set followed a different path, one that was more competitive. The Pride actually led for a majority of the set. Purdue Northwest took a 17-10 lead after scoring three straight points, Head Coach
Megan Lenhart called a timeout to try and flip the momentum. The timeout was well timed as Davenport scored three straight, cutting the deficit to four points. Davenport continued to chip away at the lead and tied up the set at 22-22 with a block assist by Tracer and VanderHorst. The Pride had a chance to win the set, they were up 24-23, but VanderHorst helped ignite a three point run for DU with two straight kills. The set-winning point was by
Hayley Kreiger with a kill, assisted by Tracer.
The Panthers started the third set by scoring four unanswered points, which included a kill by
Jenn Kay Vander Meer, VanderHorst and Tracer. The lead grew to 8-2 for Davenport after scoring another four straight points, topped off with a kill by
Jessica Marvin. The largest run for Davenport came late in the set. The Panthers scored six straight points, growing their lead to 23-10, where VanderHorst recorded two kills and was capped off by a Vander Meer service ace. Davenport won the match off a Purdue Northwest service error.
