GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport women's basketball team had a cold shooting night on Thursday in a 70-56 loss to Wayne State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at the DU Student Center. DU led for just 52 seconds after taking a 2-0 lead just 13 seconds into the game. Wayne State responded with a 13-0 run to take a 13-2 lead with 5:39 left in the first quarter. The Warriors made four straight shots during the run and Davenport could never regain the lead.
Wayne State led 22-15 at the end of the first quarter as Paige Villemure got open under the basket on an inbounds play with one second left after the Panthers had gained a little momentum and cut the deficit to five. The Warriors got the lead back to 24-18 in the first three-plus minutes of the second quarter and then went on a 15-4 run to end the quarter and led 39-22 at halftime. Davenport managed just seven points in the quarter and went 3-of-17 from the floor.
The third quarter saw Davenport try and get back into it but they trailed by double digits throughout and were down 54-39 with 10 minutes left. DU went on an 11-2 run in the fourth quarter to trail 60-50 with 3:30 left to play. The Panthers had two chances at the three-pointer to cut the deficit to single digits but missed and the Warriors pulled away for the 14-point win on the road.
Davenport's leading scorer
Jenna Falkenberg had an off night missing all nine of her field goals to finish with four points, five rebounds and three blocks in 18 minutes.
Toni Grace was the only player in double figures for the Panthers with 11 points going 7-of-10 at the free throw line. Davenport improved in ball control with a season-low 11 turnovers and had 11 assists on 19 made field goals.
Taylor Opolka finished with nine points and eight rebounds off the bench.
Natalie Tucker finished with nine points and four rebounds in 28 minutes.
