Panthers hurt by long-range shooting in loss to Tiffin

DU fell 71-64 and Ashley Cline had a season-high nine points

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport women's basketball team was defeated by Tiffin University, 71-64, on Thursday evening in their second GLIAC meeting between the schools. The Panthers got off to a good start in the first half and played solid defense. Davenport led 15-10 after the first quarter and 36-34 at halftime. However, in the second half it was all Tiffin as they continued to shoot over 50 percent from the field which helped them secure the win over the Panthers. Tiffin improved to 7-14 overall, 3-10 in the GLIAC while Davenport falls to 7-13 overall and 5-8 in the conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Davenport would capitalized on their first possession from a lay-up by Amanda Merz. Davenport would score the next 7 points as they would increased their lead to nine points. Tiffin would counter with a run of their own late in the quarter to narrow the lead to five to be only down 15-10.
-Davenport and Tiffin would trade baskets all second quarter with no team having more than a five-point lead. Going into the half Davenport would be leading 36-34. The Panthers finished the half shooting 47.3 percent from the field.
-Tiffin regrouped in the locker room at halftime and raced out to tie the game at 37 with 8:17 left in the third quarter. Tiffin would continue to build their lead and would go on a 9-2 run to lead by seven. Davenport would cut the lead down to three with a pair of layups from Emily Severn and Ashley Cline and a three by Martyna Pioro to be only down by three with 3:21 left in the third quarter. Tiffin would go on a 10-3 run to finish the quarter, bringing the lead back up to 10 to give the Dragons a 59-49 lead.
-The Panthers would not regain the lead in the fourth quarter and would finish the game with 15 points in the quarter and shot 32.3 percent in the second half. They did not fare well from behind the arc going 4-of-17 in the entire game.

INSIDE THE BOX
-Davenport finished shooting 40.3 percent from the floor (27-of-67) including 4-of-17 behind the arc. Tiffin shot 51.1 percent overall (24-of-47) and were a stellar 14-of-24 from behind the arc. Tiffin fared well at the charity stripe going 9-of-12, while DU was 6-of-11.
-The final tally for points off turnovers was 19-18 in favor of DU. The Panthers also outscored the Dragons, 42-8, in the painted area.
-Kiley May led all scorers with 18 points on 4-of-4 from behind the arc for the Dragons. Ali Schirmer added 13 points on 4-of-9 from the floor.
-Severn led the team in scoring with 15 points on 6-of-18 from the floor. Jenna Falkenberg recorded her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Claire Austin led the team with six rebounds in 18 minutes. Cline finished with a season-high nine points on 4-of-6 shooting in 13 minutes. Merz dished out six assists to lead the squad.
 
UP NEXT
-The Panthers have a quick turnaround as they will face #1 Ashland on Saturday Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. at the DU Student Center. This will be the second meeting between the teams as Ashland prevailed in the first meeting 96-50. The Eagles earned their 58th straight victory on Thursday night with a 101-84 win on the road at Wayne State.
