ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Davenport women's basketball team held Grand Valley State 14 points below their season average on Saturday (Feb. 10), but could not generate enough offense in a 56-47 loss to the Lakers. The second and third quarter were pivotal as DU was outscored 26-11. The first and fourth quarter saw the Panthers outscore the Lakers 36-30 including 20-14 in the fourth.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The teams were knotted up at 16 after the first quarter. The teams combined for four ties in the quarter and DU took advantage of early sloppy play for GVSU with seven points off turnovers. Davenport had the largest lead in the quarter at 16-11 with 1:39 left after a jumper by
Martyna Pioro.
-Cassidy Boensch converted a traditional three-point play to start the second quarter and the Lakers built their lead to 30-19 at halftime. Davenport did not score for the first 3:56 of the quarter until a three-pointer by
Claire Austin. The Panthers were 1-of-12 shooting in the second quarter including 1-of-10 behind the arc. They did have four steals including two by
Amanda Merz.
-Davenport hover around a double-digit deficit for the final 5:20 of the third quarter as the Lakers built a 42-27 lead heading into the final quarter.
-The Panthers fought back in the fourth and cut the deficit to 49-44 with 1:36 remaining on a triple by Merz. Jenn DeBoer split at the charity stripe and then DU did not score again until Severn was fouled on a three and made all three free throws for a 52-47 deficit with 13 seconds left. DeBoer and Boensch each made two free throws in the closing seconds for the nine-point win.
INSIDE THE BOX
-Severn scored a game-high 18 points and played all 40 minutes. She was 5-of-11 from the floor including 4-of-7 behind the arc. She also tied the team-high with six rebounds.
-Merz finished with a game-high five steals and also had four assists and five points.

Hannah Wilkerson scored nine points on 4-of-7 shooting and also had a pair of steals in 23 minutes.
-GVSU finished the game shooting 35.8 percent (19-of-53) and were 14-of-18 at the free throw line. Davenport finished the game shooting 30.2 percent (16-of-53) and were 8-of-9 at the line. The Lakers had a 24-4 advantage in bench points as Pioro scored all four bench points for the Panthers.

-The Panthers will play their third straight road game at Northwood (14-8, 10-6) on Thursday, Feb. 15 beginning at 6 p.m. The Timberwolves are fifth overall in the GLIAC standings. Davenport beat Northwood, 63-50, back on Jan. 11.
