Mowery nets two game-winning goals over Kent State

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – For their last two regular season games Davenport hosted Kent State on Friday and Saturday. The Panthers won both games, improving their win streak to six games heading into postseason play. Sherman Mowery had himself a clutch weekend, he scored both game-winning goals. Davenport also honored their seniors, Tanner Swift, Tyler Ploeg, Wade Weisgerber, Sam Basich, Everett Thompson, Mike Gessler, and Nate Ferris, before the game on Saturday.
 
Game 1 (Friday, February 16)
Final Score: Davenport 6, Kent State University 2

Records: Davenport 17-12, Kent State 21-9

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Luke Cowan scored the first goal of the game for either team. Cowan scored 6:37 into the game on an even strength effort, assisted by Luke Formica and Ian Thompson. Davenport went on the power play in the eighth minute of play after Kent State was called for a tripping minor. The Panthers could not score during their man advantage, but got another even strength goal later on in the period from Chalmers McKeen. He scored in the 15th minute, assisted by Alex Hulford and Gessler.
-The Golden Flashes struck first in the second period, cutting the Panthers lead down to one goal. Mowery scored the eventual game-winning goal 73 seconds after the goal by Kent State. Davenport piled on two more goals during the period to give themselves a 5-1 lead heading into the final period.
-Kent State scored the first goal of the period, bringing the score to 5-2 DU. Mowery scored another goal later on in the period, he second on the night.
-Mowery scored two goals to lead in scoring.
-Adam Goudelock and Alyx Fonseca each recorded two assists.
-Jason Rhynold saw limited action in net during his 60 minutes of play. Rhynold stopped 15 of the 17 shots he faced.
 
Game 2 (Saturday, February 17)

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Kent State gathered an early lead in the second game against the Panthers by scoring 8:59 into the game. Davenport responded with two unanswered goals following the Golden Flashes goal. Everett Thompson scored less than 60 seconds after Kent State to tie the game 1-1. The Panthers broke the tie with their first power play goal of the game by Hulford with 3:18 to go in the period.
-In the second period, the Golden Flashes held DU scoreless and in the process tied the game 2-2.
-Davenport found themselves down one goal in the second half of the final period. With 10 minutes to go in the game the Panthers trailed 3-2. Ogden gave Davenport hope when he tied the game 3-3 with 7:26 left in regulation. The Panthers continued attacking on offense and Mowery reclaimed the DU lead 4-3 with 6:39 to play. Everett Thompson finished off the Golden Flashes with an empty net goal during the last minute of play to give DU a two-goal lead.
-E. Thompson scored twice on the night, one on an unassisted effort.
-Five players had one assist during the game, Chris Corgan, E. Thompson, Brad Reitter, I. Thompson, and Fonseca.
-Tanner Swift got the nod to start as goalie and played the entire game while recording 30 saves.
 
UP NEXT
The Panthers next game will be in postseason play. Davenport competes in the GLCHL Playoffs this week from February 22-24. The first game for DU is vs. Western Michigan on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played in Ann Arbor, Mich.
