MARIETTA, Ga. - Davenport struggled to knock off the winter freeze and lost to No. 2 Life University 69-24 on Saturday, Feb. 24 in Mid-South conference play.
"We had to keep the score close and we were able to keep it to 36-10, but Life has a way of scoring rather quickly and exploit your mistakes," said head coach Harry King. "We have some things we need to cover before heading back south to take on Clemson."
Senior
Noah Zomberg and
Thomas Cheslek put the Panthers on the board at 17-10 as the closest point in the game. Losing captain
Drew Boatright in the 34th minute did not diminish the strength of the tight five with freshman Matt Moroniak stepping in. Coming back hard in the towards the end of the first half, the Panthers came right back with another score from Zomberg and Ralf Tirivanhu adding the conversion. The scoring for the Panthers ran short until a burst from freshman
Brady Erlich and linking up with forward Joshua McAdam gave the Panthers their final score and a conversion by Zomberg in the closing minutes. After that it was all Life to close out the scoring 69-24.
Davenport travels this week to play Clemson to close out there home-and-away matches. DU moves up in the D1A Rankings and scores a bonus point for the four try's scored against one of the toughest defensive teams in the country.
