OZARK, Mo. - The Davenport baseball team got back to the diamond for the first time since their spring trip on Friday as they began a four-game weekend series at Drury. The battle of the Panthers went to the home team by a final score of 9-5.
Davenport currently stands at 7-6 overall while Drury improved to 6-10 by getting to starting pitcher
Grant Wolfram in the fourth and fifth inning. Davenport led 2-0 after scoring twice in the top of the second inning.
Oscar Heredia hit the first of his three doubles with
Anthony DiPonio moving to third base with one out.
Jimmy Filipski drove in the first run with a single to right.
Brent Showers then had a sacrifice fly to right scoring the other run.
Drury took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Caleb Essick had a two-run scoring single up the middle and later the Panthers scored on a throwing error trying to throw out a base stealer at third and the throw allowed the runner to score. Drury added two more in the fifth after three straight singles to start the inning. Avery Jennings was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run and Bayler Hinz walked with the sacks full to score another run.
Davenport down 5-2 responded with two runs in the top of the sixth.
Zac Wilson doubled to center to start the inning and
Brian Sobieski doubled him home on the next at-bat. Heredia doubled home Sobieski to cut the lead to 5-4. Drury got two runs in the bottom of the sixth off
Pete Zeimis who replaced Wolfram. Riley Herron had the big hit with a two-run scoring double to left center with two outs.
Davenport added a run in the top of the eighth cutting the deficit to 7-5.
Noah Marcoux had a RBI single scoring Heredia who reached on his third double of the game. Zeimis allowed two runs in the bottom of the eighth giving Drury a four-run cushion heading into the ninth.
Heredia's three doubles tied a school record and his three hits tied his career-high in that category. Wolfram finished with five innings allowing seven hits and four earned runs. He struck out nine and walked four moving to 0-2 this season. Zeimis went 2.1 innings and yielded six hits and three earned runs with two strikeouts.
Evan Maize got the final two outs out of the bullpen. Filipski finished 2-for-4 as the other Panther with multiple hits. The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
