CALEDONIA, Mich. - The GLIAC opener for the baseball team saw visiting Wayne State put together a complete performance in a 12-4 decision over the Panthers. Jared Tobey did not have a perfect outing on the mound for the Warriors, but did fight through a couple of tough innings to pick up the win moving to 3-0. Tobey allowed a run in the second and third but held the Panthers without a hit from the second inning until he exited after six innings. He went six innings and allowed a two-out RBI double to
Anthony DiPonio in the second inning.
Wayne State got a pair of runs in the top of the first off
Justin Palmbos for Davenport. Justin Kelly and Ryan Mergener each had a RBI single for the Warriors. The Warriors scored once in the top of the third on an unearned run as Mergener had a two-out RBI single to make it 3-1.
Davenport cut the lead down to 3-2 in the bottom of the third.
Brent Showers was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a passed ball. Showers moved to third on a groundout and
Nolan Bryant hit a chopper to the pitcher as Showers scored.
Palmbos (2-2) took the loss leaving after a leadoff single in the top of the sixth. He gave the ball to freshman
Evan Maize and finished with eight hits allowed and three earned runs. He tossed 106 pitches and walked three with three strikeouts. Maize allowed the inherited runner to score and also gave up another earned run as the Warriors scored twice in the sixth to lead 5-2.
The game got out of reach as Wayne State scored four times in the seventh to increased their lead to 9-2.
Trevor Russo took the brunt of those runs giving up four runs (two earned) in 2/3 inning. Davenport scored twice in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Tyler Waldrop.
Zac Wilson singled to left for the second hit of the game by DU.
Noah Marcoux had a pinch-hit RBI triple to deep center and DiPonio followed with a sacrifice fly to right for a 9-4 deficit.
The Warriors scored three more times in the ninth off
Cal Djuraskovic. Kelly had a RBI double to left center and Tristen Jorah also had a RBI single. Jorah finished 4-for-6 with two runs and two RBI. Jacob Finkbeiner went 3-for-3 with three walks, two runs and two RBI. Mergener went 4-for-6 with two runs and two RBI. All nine starters had a hit for Wayne State as they collected 18 total. The two teams will continue their four-game series tomorrow.
