CALEDONIA, Mich. - It took around four hours to play and in the end it was Davenport winning 23-12 over Hillsdale on Tuesday night. The game was shifted to Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex due to an unplayable field at Hillsdale and the teams got together for the first time after the original home game on Mar. 20 was canceled due to poor weather.
The Panthers (12-9) won their fourth straight and also tied for third-most runs in a game in school history against the Chargers. The amazing thing is that all 23 runs scored were earned runs against five different pitchers. Chris Dunn for the Chargers and
Cole Sanderson for the Panthers were the starting pitchers. Neither one of them pitched two innings as the score was tied 3-3.
Joe Hamrick tossed in the second and then was lifted in the fourth inning after giving up a home run to
Austin Petravicius, a double to
Brian Sobieski and a RBI single by
Anthony DiPonio. Hamrick (0-2) took the loss as the Panthers took a 5-4 lead after Petravicius hit his first home run of the season.
Evan Maize was ruled for the win in relief improving to 2-0. He faced five batters coming into the game in the sixth inning with two runners on base and Davenport leading 13-9. He got a sacrifice flyout to center followed by a groundout to third. He also pitched a perfect seventh inning before Davenport put it out of reach with eight runs in the bottom of the seventh.
The game was broken open in the bottom of the fourth as DU scored nine times to take a 13-4 lead. Hamrick gave up four runs and then Sawyer Allen gave up six runs and three walks in 2/3 of an inning. Hillsdale got it close at 13-10 but then the Panthers scored twice in the bottom of the sixth and then had the big seventh inning.
Davenport collected 20 hits on the night and also drew 13 walks. The big offensive arsenal was led by DiPonio,
Jake O'Donovan and
Oscar Heredia. The trio all set career-high in RBI as DiPonio went 3-for-4 with 5 RBI, O'Donovan went 2-for-3 with a triple and 4 RBI and Heredia was 3-for-4 with 4 RBI. Petravicius was just a double short of the cycle going 3-for-6 with four runs and 3 RBI.
Brian Sobieski set a career-high with four runs scored and collected his sixth double of the season.
Jake Bozzo had his first double of the season and 2 RBI.
Connor Zuidema also had the first two RBI of his career at DU.Â
