Panthers earn split at SVSU with game two win

Brian Sobieski grand slam late in game two leads to 7-2 win

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The doubleheader on Friday between Davenport and Saginaw Valley State saw the teams split as the Cardinals won 6-2 and then the Panthers returned the favor 7-2. Mason Schwellenbach kept the Panthers on their heels in game one as DU could not score until the seventh inning. SVSU had built a 6-0 lead up to that point with Schwellenbach giving up just three hits and striking out nine.

Grant Jebbia came into the game in the seventh for the Cardinals and he gave up a one-out single to Anthony DiPonio and then a two-out, two-run home run to Noah Marcoux which was his first career homer. Grant Wolfram (1-3) still has not found the form which allowed him to be a NAIA All-American last year. He went 5.2 innings and allowed nine hits and four earned runs in the loss. Wolfram walked two but fanned just one, marking the lowest in any start for his DU career.

The late offense in game one carried over into game two. DU scored in the top of the first off Alex Millhisler. The first two batters were retired when Austin Petravicius reached on an error. Zac Wilson then singled to center as Petravicius advanced to second. Brian Sobieski then singled to right center for the RBI and a 1-0 lead.

Andrew Click coming off a complete-game shutout against Wayne State, tossed four scoreless innings to start game two. He ran into trouble by allowing the leadoff batter to reach in each of the first four innings. However, he stranded three total runners to keep the lead at 1-0.

Craig Wilson tied the game for Saginaw Valley State in the bottom of the fifth with a RBI single through the left side of the infield. Davenport regained the lead in the top of the sixth with two runs. The inning started with two outs before Wilson singled and then took second on a wild pitch. Sobieski then reached on a fielding error to keep the inning alive. DiPonio made the error hurt as he singled home Wilson. Millhisler was then replaced by Brian Feinauer. Alex Huard pinch hit and walked to load the bases. The Panthers got another gift with a passed ball to make it 3-1.

Pete Zeimis relieved Wolfram to start the bottom of the sixth. He retired the Cardinals in order and then DU added four runs in the top of the seventh on a swing by Sobieski. Nolan Bryant singled with one out and then Andrew Figueroa walked. Petravicius also drew a walk to load the bases and after a strikeout, Caleb Somerville came in to pitch for SVSU. Sobieski rudely greeted Somerville as he took a 1-2 pitch out of the yard for a grand slam to left field. It was the eighth home run of the season by Sobieski and increased the lead to 7-1.

Zeimis gave up a leadoff triple and then a groundout to score the run in the bottom of the seventh but DU won 7-2 to earn the split on the day. Sobieski hit the second grand slam of the season for DU and his 5 RBI for the game tied a career-high. Sobieski also increased his career home run total to 24.

The two teams will conclude their four-game series with a 10 a.m. first pitch on Saturday. The start time was moved up from noon originally.
