Wolfram goes the distance in Game 1 win over Northwood

The Panthers lost 3-2 on a walk-off single in Game 2

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The venue changed but the result was the same on Friday as Davenport split a doubleheader with No. 22 Northwood for the second straight day. The Panthers (19-15, 9-7) were on the brink of a series sweep as the two teams they lost were one-run, low-scoring affairs. The first game on this day belonged to Grant Wolfram for DU. He threw a complete-game, one-run gem in a 6-1 win. The nightcap was in control until the bottom of the ninth when the Timberwolves scored twice including a one-out, walk-off single. DU was 9-0 when leading after the eighth inning prior to the loss this season.

GAME 1
Wolfram improved to 3-3 and threw his second straight quality start. He tossed seven innings and allowed six hits to go with two walks and 10 strikeouts. It was the second straight start with double-digit strikeouts. Northwood scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth.

Ian Dimitrie also went the distance for Northwood giving up six earned runs on 10 hits to go with one walk and five strikeouts. Zac Wilson broke another career record in the contest as his two stolen bases gave him 47 to surpass Cam Cooper. Wilson set the career hit record yesterday and went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Anthony DiPonio went 2-for-3 with two RBI. He had a clutch two-run single to center in DU's four-run fifth inning. Austin Petravicius, Nolan Bryant, Jacob Buchberger and Brian Sobieski also recorded an RBI for the Panthers. DiPonio also had the only extra-base hit by both teams, a double with one out in the fourth inning.

GAME 2
The teams were scoreless through four innings as DU's Andrew Click and NU's Jake Gross were locked in a duel. Northwood got a 1-0 lead in the fifth after the leadoff hitter reached on an error. Travis Janes would eventually come around to score with two outs on a bunt single by Miles Hardy. Davenport equaled the score in the sixth as Oscar Heredia walked and Lennon Gwizdala replaced Gross on the mound for Northwood. Petravicius greeted him with a double down the left field line to set up runners on second and third. Wilson hit a sacrifice fly to right scoring pinch runner Connor Zuidema. DU however stranded runners on first and third.

Davenport took a 2-1 lead in the seventh courtesy of a pinch-hit single by Figueroa. The RBI knock scored DiPonio who led off the inning with a single to center field. DU left two more runners on base which would later prove to be critical. Northwood threatened in their half of the seventh loading the bases against Click. The senior hurler stepped up by getting a grounder off the bat of David Vinsky. Vinsky would get another chance later in the game and come through for his team.

In the eighth inning, the Timberwolves got a leadoff walk and Pete Zeimis replaced Click on the bump. He stranded two runners by striking out Kyle Ziegler looking. The Panthers clinging to a 2-1 lead saw Austin Lansky single with one out in the ninth. Petravicius then singled with two outs as Lansky moved to third and Petravicius took second on the throw into third. The runners in scoring position did not come home however as Nolan Bryant grounded out to second.

Zeimis was hurt in the bottom of the ninth by walks. He issued a free pass to pinch hitter Ryan McClelland with one out and Brian Dombrowski at the top of the order drew a walk on four pitches. Pinch runner Noah Ingram at second base scored the tying run after Vinsky singled up the middle and then Javier Martinez followed with a game-winning single to right center as Dombrowski scored from second with the winning run. Gwizdala got the win in relief going four innings with two walks and three strikeouts. Zeimis suffered his second loss of the season.
