Showers helps sweep Ashland on Senior Day

The catcher had a career-high four RBI including game-winning, two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The drama is usually high on Senior Day, but it was intensified on Saturday as the Davenport baseball team was trailing by a run going into the bottom of the eighth. The Panthers (26-17, 16-8 GLIAC) saw an 8-3 lead evaporate as Ashland scored six straight runs to take a 9-8 lead. DU was looking at two outs and the bases loaded when catcher Brent Showers delivered his biggest hit of the season. He singled up the middle on a 1-1 count and Austin Lansky and Austin Petravicius scored to give DU a 10-9 lead. The Panthers got an insurance run as Anthony DiPonio doubled down the left field line scoring Alex Huard from third. Showers was gunned out at the plate trying to score from first to end the inning.

The game was wrapped up in the top of the ninth by Evan Maize, who recorded the final out of the eighth inning. The Eagles (26-17, 13-11 GLIAC) made things interesting as Alex Niecikowski was hit by a pitch with one out and Sam Hawley followed with a single to right. Austin Eifrid struck out for the second out and Maize fanned Matt Littrell on a 3-2 pitch to end the game. Maize improved to 3-0 with the win and struck out three of the six batters he faced out of the bullpen.

Lansky and Showers each had big days for the Panthers. Showers drove in a career-high four runs and scored once. Lansky went 4-for-4 with a walk and also recorded two runs and two RBI. DiPonio collected two doubles going 3-for-5 with three RBI. Krystien Johnson-Battilana got the start for Davenport and saw the Eagles jump out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. Davenport would score the next four runs off Ashland starter Josh Stover who would exit after three innings.

Johnson-Battilana ran into trouble in the sixth inning and was taken out. He finished with 5.2 innings and gave up four earned runs with four walks and three strikeouts. Pete Zeimis could not hold the lead out of the bullpen. He gave up the go-ahead runs in the top of the eighth and finished with two innings while allowing four earned runs. All nine starters in the lineup had a hit for the Panthers.

Series Notes: Lansky reached base 10 times in the series (.769) going 6-for-9 with four walks...he also sported a 1.000 fielding percentage in 25 chances at catcher...Petravicius batted .600 going 9-for-15 including eight hits in the first eight at-bats to start the series...he drove in five runs and hit a pair of homers...DU batted .398 as a team and outscored the Eagles, 37-15, to move into sole possession of second place in the GLIAC standings.
