DETROIT, Mich. - Sophomore
Jacob Buchberger had the biggest hit of his career to date on Sunday (May 13) as the Panthers defeated Ashland, 8-4, in the GLIAC Tournament. Buchberger clubbed a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall for a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 12th to propel the Panthers into the championship round of the tournament against Northwood.
The Panthers (33-18) defeated the Eagles for the fifth time this season but it was a battle throughout. Davenport took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third as
Anthony DiPonio singled through the left side scoring
Alex Huard with an unearned run.
Ashland tied the game up with a run in the top of the fifth. Carson Mittermeier had a RBI single to center field for the Eagles. Davenport added a run in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of a RBI single by
Zac Wilson with another unearned run.
Ashland took the lead 4-2 in the top of the seventh as
Krystien Johnson-Battilana was replaced by
Grant Wolfram with runners on first and third with no outs. Austin Eifrid had a sacrifice fly and Connor Barleben delivered a two-run double to left center.
The Panthers answered with two runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie it. Wilson doubled to start the inning and Sobieski singled off the pitcher Chris Slavik. That forces him out of the game for Pat Carlozzi. He walked Buchberger and then Petravicius and Huard had back-to-back sacrifice flies.
Ashland left the bases loaded in the top of the 10th against
Andrew Click who entered in the eighth inning for DU. He got a full-count strikeout against Alex Niecikowski to end the inning. The Panthers started the bottom of the 12th with a single by DiPonio.
Nolan Bryant moved him over with a bunt and Wilson was intentionally walked.
Aaron Fadden then also drew a walk to setup the grand slam by Buchberger.
