GOLDEN, Colo. – The women's volleyball team opened their 2018 season at the Oredigger Classic, hosted by the Colorado School of Mines. The Panthers faced two tough opponents and fell in both matches. The two teams that Davenport University played had a combined record of 40-16 last season. Davenport went head to head against the host of the Tournament, Colorado School of Mines, in the first match and lost in three sets. After sitting out the second round of games, Davenport took on the University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) in the late match and lost in three sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-SET SCORES: 19-25, 16-25, 22-25
-The opening part of the first set saw both teams trade points until the set was tied 11-11. The Orediggers went on a few runs and built up a 21-14 lead. Davenport scored four out of the last six points in the set, but it was too late.
-School of Mines started the second set with the advantage, building up a lead of 10-6 after an attacking error by DU. The Panthers responded with five straight points to take the lead 11-10. During that stretch
Jessica Marvin had two kills and a block assist. The Orediggers dominated the last part of the set, scoring seven unanswered points to take the 25-16 win to go up two sets.
-Again, the Orediggers got off to a hot start in the set. DU trailed 8-2 before getting a string of three points to cut the lead down to three. The School of Mines scored four straight points just a few plays later to take a 14-8 lead. Davenport scored three straight points to make the set 17-19 in favor of CSM. The Panthers made another run down the stretch to make the score 21-23 in favor of CSM. The Orediggers finished the match with a kill, winning 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-SET SCORES: 16-25, 17-25, 19-25
-Davenport opened this match on the right foot by scoring the first two points. The lead didn't last long as the Cougars went on top 11-7. The Panthers couldn't get momentum together as the Cougars continued to build their lead. Sioux Falls scored 13 of the last 18 points in the set.
-The Cougars had an eight point run towards the beginning of the set to take a 10-3 lead. After getting down 7-18 the Panthers scored six out of seven points to cut the lead down to six points. USF gathered their composure and won the last three points to win 25-17.
-Again, the Cougars got off to good start in the final set, jumping out to an 11-5 lead. Davenport never quit in the game though, the Panthers scored five straight points to cut the lead down to 16-20. After scoring the five straight points the Panthers couldn't string together back to back points the rest of the set. The Cougars won three out of the last four points to win the set and match.

The Panthers get another shot to get their first win of the season in less than 24 hours. Davenport takes on Palm Beach Atlantic at 10 am MT then Lee University at 1 pm MT.
