Panthers battle back-and-forth in 3-3 tie at No. 19 Maryville

Brayden Texer, Brogan Shrimpton and Stephen Carroll each scored for DU

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Davenport men's soccer team played their third straight nationally-ranked team dating back to last season on Thursday (Aug. 30). Davenport's season opener was a trip to No. 19 Maryville and the see-saw affair ended in a 3-3 tie. The Saints scored first and the teams alternated goals over 110 minutes.

The big question heading into the match was who would replace four-year starter Aaron Orban in goal. Haris Dzafic got the nod and the freshman played the first half. He yielded two goals and made one save. Eric Riley replaced Dzafic at intermission and played the final 65 minutes. Riley did not make a save and allowed a goal.

The match was very physical and the cards were flying. DU got seven yellow cards while the home team only had two. Each team were whistled for 15 fouls.

Helmut Florencia headed home the game's first goal at 6:28 from seven yards out off a corner kick. Brayden Texer answered for the Panthers at 34:22. The Saints could not clear the ball and Texer's goal was a rebound from eight yards out. Cedric Sengl answered just 1:10 later for a 2-1 lead going into halftime.

All-American Brogan Shrimpton got his senior campaign off to a good start with a goal at 55:43. He had a breakaway from the half way line and had two defenders on his heels. He buried it top shelf from 25 yards out to make it 2-2. Pontus Gitselov made it 3-2 at 61:00 off a centering pass from in close. JD Sohn got his second assist of the game for Maryville. Stephen Carroll came up with the game-tying goal at 63:47 from Texer off a corner kick.

"It was a fantastic effort by our squad against a very good opponent," said head coach Chris Hughes. "They showed great resolve and fight for 110 minutes. Daire O'Riordan and Yovany Duran anchored the team in the midfield. It was great to get out of the gate and have a chance to win during overtime."
