HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs came out super aggressive in the first half. Freshman keeper
Macie DeWyse was kept busy throughout the game; she made six saves within the opening 12 minutes of play. Roheema Benett recorded the first shots of the game for the Panthers. She gathered the ball towards the top of the goalie box and fired a shot that was blocked, she regained possession and again her shot was blocked by the defender. Ferris State go on the board when a ball was played on the ground to Carley Dubbert from Pia Nagel and Dubbert shot the ball between DeWyse's legs into the net, making the game 1-0 in the Bulldogs favor. Davenport had a great look in the 27
th minute of play. After a foul by the Bulldogs
Alex Prout riffled a free kick towards the net, it bounced off a player in the box and nearly found the right side of the net. The next opportunity to score came in the 40
th minute as
Madeleine Zayan controlled a long ball played by
Katlyn Varney and shot with her left foot towards the far right post. The keeper dove and barely stopped the ball with her fingertips, upholding the Bulldogs one goal lead heading into half.
Ferris State provided a good amount of pressure to open the second half, recording six shots in the opening 10 minutes. The Panthers defense remained tough; as
Cassandra Bosworth and
Krystina Dunston made sure none of those shots were on goal. The Bulldogs went up two goals when they scored in the 68
th minute. Davenport found their answer less than two minutes later as Bennett was taken down in the box and the Panthers were awarded a penalty kick. Bennett stepped up with poise and knocked the ball into the right side of the net to cut the Bulldlogs lead down to one. Shortly after the goal, redshirt junior
Katherine Steiner fired a shot from the right side of the box just wide of the left post. Davenport amped up the aggressiveness down the stretch but couldn't put together enough passes to get a quality look at the net down the stretch.
Up Next
The Panthers only have one more non-conference game remaining in their schedule. Davenport hosts Grand Valley State next Sunday, September 23. The Lakers are atop the GLIAC year after year, this will be a good challenge for Davenport before they officially start conference play.
