CALEDONIA, Mich. - The quick strike offense for Davenport men's soccer turned things around on Friday night in a 3-1 win over Ashland. The Panthers trailed 1-0 at halftime and then 13 minutes into the second half before getting a break on a penalty kick from
Brogan Shrimpton.
Matt Whelan gained a step inside the 18-yard box and was taken down to give Davenport a chance to tie the game. Shrimpton buried his fourth goal of the season and second penalty kick goal in the 59th minute.
It took less than two minutes for Davenport to take a 2-1 lead. Shrimpton worked the ball on the left side and left footed a cross perfectly to the head of
Yovany Duran who delivered his second goal of the season. Davenport then played a defensive game until late when the Eagles began to push up. The counterattack came in the final minute as
Miguel Flores beat a defender with a dribble and laced a low shot from 25 yards out for his first of the season and a big insurance goal.
Ashland got on the board in the 28th minute off a deep free kick. Cameron Mendel launched a ball from about 50 yards and it fell right inside the 8-yard box and to the right post. Jordan Dees slid to the ball and tapped in across the goal line for his first of the season.
Haris Dzafic made two saves in goal but they were both challenging to keep the score 2-1 at the time of both saves.
