CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Sunday matinee between Saginaw Valley State and Davenport in men's soccer was a spirited contest with both teams fighting for each inch on the pitch. The Panthers got the first goal of the contest in the 17th minute, but the Cardinals came roaring back with four straight goals in a 4-1 decision. The matchup was a rematch of the 2017 GLIAC Tournament Championship which was a 1-0 win for the Panthers.
The teams were each looking to jockey for position in the GLIAC standings early in the season. DU with the loss is now 1-3 in the conference and 2-6-1 overall. SVSU moved to 2-1 in the conference and 4-1-2 overall. DU opened up the scoring as
Matt Whelan scored his third of the season with an assist to
Brogan Shrimpton. Shrimpton carried the ball up the right wing and crossed into the box. Whelan's first shot was saved but the rebound was buried from about seven yards out.
The tide really turned late in the first half as the Cardinals took advantage of a ball that wasn't cleared out of DU's end. Michael Hamilton passed to Azaad Liadi who lobbed a shot perfectly to the right corner with three seconds left for his first of the season from about 17 yards out. That changed the game and momentum as SVSU scored 1:52 into the second half to take a 2-1 lead. Michael Shaikly scored unassisted off a loose ball and struck it low right from about 22 yards for his first of the season.
Saginaw Valley State added goals by Pablo Ortiz in the 63rd minute from Jake Rosen and then Brady Walker from Ryan Pierson in the 82nd minute.
Haris Dzafic made three saves in goal for the Panthers. Saginaw Valley State had 13 shots in the match while the Panthers registered five.
