Davenport drops road match to Wayne State

DETROIT, Mich. – Davenport competed in their second GLIAC match in the last two days and are still looking for their first conference win of the 2018 season. The Panthers were swept by the Warriors of Wayne State, but two of the sets were determined by three or less points. The team struggled on the offensive end, hitting only .109 over the three sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-SET SCORES: 16-25, 23-25, 22-25
-Wayne State had two separate four-point runs early in the first set to take a 9-4 lead. The Panthers cut into the lead just a few points later when they went on a four-point run of their own, which included a service ace by Ashley VanderHorst, to make the score 9-12 in favor of the Warriors. Wayne State went on two more four-point runs down the stretch to make it 23-14, then the Warriors traded points until they got to 25.
-The Panthers almost came away with a pivotal set two. The Warriors led 20-17 and then the Panthers score four straight points to take a 21-20 advantage. The teams traded a few points until the score was tied 23-23. Wayne State scored back to back points for the set win to go up by two.
-Davenport went up 3-1 in the third set and held the lead until the 22nd point of the set when the Warrios tied it up 11-11. The set was back and forth until the score was 21-20 in favor of the Panthers. The Warriors proceeded to score four straight to go up 24-21. Davenport earned one more point before the Warriors won the set and the match.

UP NEXT
Davenport opens up a three-game home stand on Tuesday, September 11 against Grand Valley State University. The Panthers will host Parkside and Purdue Northwest later in the week.
