GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport women's basketball shot over 50 percent for the second time this season and came away with a 73-57 win over visiting Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (Jan. 12). The Panthers picked up their fourth home win of the season and are now 5-10 overall and 3-5 in the GLIAC. Not only did the Panthers shoot the ball well, they limited the Cardinals to 32.3 percent shooting including just 18.8 percent in the first half. Due to those factors, DU built a 21-12 lead after one quarter and a 39-18 lead at halftime. It was the fewest first half points allowed this season by the Panthers.
Jenna Falkenberg led the Panthers with 20 points (9-of-12 FG) and notched a double-double with 11 rebounds. Three other players were in double digits including 12 points by
Taylor Opolka and 11 each by
Toni Grace and
Martyna Pioro. DU led for 38:40 of 40 minutes of the contest and never trailed after the 5:41 mark of the first quarter. DU used a 13-3 run in the first quarter to build a 19-10 lead.Â
The Cardinals trimmed the lead to 23-15 in the first minute of the second quarter but then DU went on a 14-0 run. The Panthers did not allow a point for nearly eight minutes of the quarter. The Panthers led big and SVSU cut the lead down to 13 with 4:46 left in the contest, but it was the closest they would get.
