CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport men's soccer team had their five-match win streak snapped on Friday afternoon with a 1-0 loss to Ashland. The Panthers showed great pressure in the first half allowing no shots against the Eagles. In the second half, the Eagles made one play off a free kick and that proved to be the difference. DU had not allowed a goal in 530 minutes and had five straight shutouts to begin league play before the goal in the 67th minute.
COACHES CORNER - CHRIS HUGHES
"It was a good battle in wet conditions today. We created several good opportunities that we needed to finish. The ball didn't bounce our way today. We learned a good lesson today and we will become stronger as we continue our GLIAC schedule. We will now prepare for Parkside on Monday."
NOTES AND NUMBERS
- The first half as mentioned before was all Davenport as they recorded seven total shots in the first half. However, one of those found the goal as
Eoin Broughan's free kick was saved in the 39th minute.
- The Panthers really good chance to score in the first half came in the 21st minute as
Justice Sikkema shot from right wing and narrowly missed the left post.
- The Eagles recorded nine shots in the second half and had their first shot on goal in the 54th minute off a free kick by Fred Francis.
- The Eagles scored the game's only goal in the 67th minute. It looked like a harmless free kick from 43 yards by Francis. However, Joseph Renner raced into the picture and one-touched the ball from 14 yards to the lower right past a diving
Joshua Doupe. It was Renner's first goal of the season.
- The Panthers did have a flurry of activity in the last 10 minutes of gameplay but could not find the equalizer.
Miguel Flores had a great individual effort to possess the ball in the 83rd minute and crossed the ball to
Matt Whelan in the middle of the box. Whelan shot and Marshall Ney made a tremendous save. Ney also came out of his six-yard box in the 89th minute and got his hands on a shot from
Carson Brinks who carried into space and fired from the top of the box.
- DU outshot Ashland 13-9 but managed just three shots on goal. Doupe made four saves for the Panthers.
