CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport men's soccer squad picked up a critical three points in the GLIAC standings on Sunday with a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Saginaw Valley State. The match was a wild affair as the Cardinals had two players issued a red card and the Panthers scoring the game-winning goal up two men late in the match. Davenport snaps a three-game skid and improved to 6-6 overall and 6-3 in the GLIAC. SVSU moves to 8-4-1 overall and also 6-3 in the conference.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
- The match began on a sour note for the Panthers as Kairo Coone scored his third of the season just 48 seconds into the match. He took a throw-in from the far sideline and moved into space before a rifle into the top right corner from 15 yards on the left wing.
- The tone changed dramatically in the 18th minute as
Ryan Zietlow had a breakaway chance and his jersey was bragged from behind by Robbie Baker. Baker was issued a red card meaning the Panthers would have roughly 72 minutes of a man-up situation.
- The Cardinals overcame the situation for the next 14 minutes and even extended their lead. Robbie Bruce angled a free kick from 20 yards straight on off the right post and into the net for a 2-0 lead and his first goal of the season.
- Davenport just continued to chip away and have great scoring chances.
Miguel Flores off the bench would put the Panthers on the board for the first time in their last four games. He took a pass from
Matt Whelan and scored his fourth of the season from 15 yards straight on off the left post into the back of the net in the 39th minute.
- In the second half, DU was awarded a penalty kick on a push in the back in the 48th minute.
Daire O'Riordan nailed the PK for his third of the season and a tie game at 2-2.
- SVSU would again be issued a red card in the 75th minute as Coore delivered an elbow to the head of O'Riordan. The two-man advantage led to a bevy of shots for the Panthers in the upcoming minutes.
- The Panthers broke the tie in the 88th minute as
Evan Marquess delivered a ball to the middle of the box and
Lasse Pico Kjeldsen headed it home from 10 yards to the right side of the net. Kjeldsen's first goal of the season capped off a comeback for the ages.
- Davenport finished with 22 shots and 12 shots on goal. SVSU finished with five shots and four on goal.
