HOW IT HAPPENED
The ice was broken early in the contest as
Ashlyn Skidmore sent her second goal of the season into the back of the net. Skidmore was assisted by
Roheema Bennett on the play and Davenport held a 1-0 lead just 4:47 into the contest. The two goalies didn't see a whole lot of action the rest of the half. Davenport recorded one more shot on goal, thanks to
Holly Bertke, and Northern Michigan recorded two. All three of the shots were saved and the Panthers went into halftime with a 1-0 advantage, thanks to a quick goal by Skidmore.
The second half had plenty of scoring and the intensity picked up significantly. Northern Michigan scored an equalizer roughly 13 minutes into the half as Gaeline Hirabayashi snuck one past
Samantha Beckles. Davenport fought back and took a 2-1 lead after Bertke netted her second goal of the season. Bertke scored on an unassisted effort 67:32 into the game. Things started getting physical as
Sarah Possett was called for a yellow card in the 70
th minute. Shortly after,
Imanie Richards was whistled for a foul, inside the Davenport goalie box. The Wildcats received a penalty kick and Jaime Montgomery took advantage to tie the game at 2-2 with just under 20 minutes to play. With just over 10 minutes to go in the game Davenport was on the attack, looking for the go-ahead goal. Freshman Dekam came through in the clutch for her first-ever collegiate goal. Dekam scored with 11:14 remaining in the game, assisted by Vanpatten. The Panthers held onto the one-goal lead down the stretch and won their second straight GLIAC contest.
Beckles recorded three saves in the game.
