Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Panthers pounce Peacocks 5-0

DU has won four straight in shutout fashion

FAYETTE, Iowa - The Panther men's soccer team took care of business on Friday with a 5-0 win at Upper Iowa. The newest member of the GLIAC in men's soccer did not have an answer for a hot Davenport squad. DU won for the fourth straight time in shutout fashion. The Panthers are now 4-3 overall and unblemished in conference at 4-0.

COACHES CORNER - CHRIS HUGHES
"It was a good team effort today. Posting another shutout in this league is impressive. Saw several players score today which is good to see. Daire and Eoin had very good games and both controlled the middle of the park. Got three more points today and tomorrow he prep for Purdue Northwest."

NOTES AND NUMBERS
- The Panthers wasted little time scoring in the second minute. Jake Van Schie and Eoin Broughan each had an assist on the goal which was scored by Tyler Welch. Welch streaked to the goal and a cross toward the box was converted with great timing for Welch's first goal of the season.
- The next goal was one for the highlight reel in the 20th minute. DU had a corner kick and the ball bounced around in the 18-yard box. Cian Quinn then delivered a bicycle-type kick over his head and the ball found the upper left corner for a 2-0 lead. Quinn's first of his career at Davenport was assisted by Daire O'Riordan.
- Matt Whelan got into the action with back-to-back goals in the 39th and 51st minute. Whelan's fourth of the season was from 18 yards out and came on a ball played back to him and he delivered a low strike into the bottom left corner. His fifth of the season was assisted by Ryan Zietlow. Zietlow headed the ball to the middle of the field and Whelan had a half-volley from close range for a 4-0 lead. Whelan currently ranks second in the league in goals scored.
- The bicycle kick theme continued for DU's final goal in the 72nd minute. Miguel Flores scored his third of the season as Broughan got his second assist of the match. He lifted a ball to around the 12-yard mark just left of the goal and Flores laid out for bicycle kick and was mobbed by his teammates.
- Joshua Doupe and Markus Sundin shared the shutout in goal. Doupe made two saves and played the first 78:35 of the game. Sundin finished it off and made one save.
- DU set a season-high with 28 shots and had 11 shots on goal. Welch led the team with seven shots. The Peacocks finished with five shots and three shots on goal.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Panthers (4-3, 4-0) will stay on the road and visit Purdue Northwest (1-8, 1-4) on Sunday at noon eastern. The Pride have dropped their last two games including today's game against Ashland by a final of 1-0.
