HAMMOND, Ind. - The streak is alive and well for the Davenport men's soccer team as they continued to play inspired with their fifth straight shutout. This time it was a 3-0 decision at Purdue Northwest on a glorious Sunday weather wise. The Panthers improved to 4-2 on the road this season and will now enter a six-game homestand beginning on Friday against Ashland.
COACHES CORNER - CHRIS HUGHES
"Today was a competitive match with a well-coached Purdue Northwest team. We were able to get on the board late in the first half which was a good way to go into halftime. In the second half, we were able to open them up and find better chances. Give credit to our backline of
Carson Brinks,
Lasse Pico Kjeldsen,
Cian Quinn,
Jake Van Schie and
Ryan Zietlow as well as keeper
Joshua Doupe for finding another shutout. I'm happy we got six points this weekend on the road. We now look forward to prep for Friday's match against Ashland."
NOTES AND NUMBERS
- The first half was played tightly as both teams managed to post seven shots. Doupe made three saves while Raul Garrido-Garcia had two saves for the Pride.
- The Panthers got the first goal of the match with 10 seconds left until halftime. The Pride defense could not clear the ball after a few attempts and that pressure led to the ball going to Zietlow about 30 yards away. He ripped a shot straight on just under the crossbar for his first of the season and second of his career unassisted.
- Davenport put additional pressure on the Pride in the second half with 12 more shots and eight of those going on net.
-
Daire O'Riordan would score both goals in the second half for the Panthers. In the 50th minute, DU would get a corner kick and it was played into the box. The ball bounced off the head of a Pride defender and right towards O'Riordan. He wasted no time in drilling a low shot to the left corner from about 25 yards out for the 2-0 lead. The final goal came in the 87th minute via a penalty kick. DU was taken down near the top of the box allowing for O'Riordan's shot into the left side of the net for his second goal of the season and fourth of his career.
- Doupe finished with a season-high eight saves. He now has not allowed a goal in the last 497 minutes and 25 seconds of game play.
