GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - In the first half on Saturday, neither Davenport nor William Jewell could find the bottom of the net. The Panthers shot 26.3 percent (10-for-38) and the Cardinals answered with a clip of just 23.5 percent (8-for-34). In those first 20 minutes, the two teams combined to shoot only 1-for-31 from three-point range. After a two-point halftime lead, the second half was a completely different story for Davenport as it outscored William Jewell by seven, 41-34, to win it, 63-54.
Prior to William Jewell,
Robbie Bramhill was shooting just 20 percent from deep with two makes in his first 10 attempts. Fast forward to Saturday and the Canadian big man exploded for a game/season-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting (3-for-6 from behind the arc) to go with five rebounds (three offensive) and two blocks.
Chris Rollins (14 points) and
Janeau Joubert (10 points) also scored in double-figures for the Panthers. DU's other team leaders included
Tafari Beckford with 12 rebounds and Rollins with both four assists and five steals.
In a defensive struggle of a first half, the biggest lead either team had was five and it came from Davenport, 16-11, with just under six and a half minutes to go until halftime. On the other side, William Jewell led by as many as four, 20-16, but the home team went into the locker room intermission with a two-point advantage, 22-20. The low-scoring first half saw two ties (16-16 and 20-20) and two lead changes.
Out of the break, Davenport's offense came to life as it opened the second half on a 25-8 run over the first nine minutes and change. That spurt pushed the Panthers to their biggest lead of the game at 19, 47-28. After that, William Jewell could never get closer than eight points, 55-47, 58-50 and 60-52.
The Panthers shot an even 50 percent from the field in the second half (14-for-28), including 6-for-13 (46.2 percent) from distance, and made seven of their 10 attempts at the free throw line. Davenport also outscored William Jewell 21-13 in points off turnovers, 29-21 in bench points and 30-26 in paint scoring.
Next up, Davenport's four-game homestand continues with Olivet on Tuesday and tip is set for 6 p.m.
