Panthers Defeat Western Michigan to Earn First Win of the Season

recap by Tyler Kuehl

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – After a couple of tough weekends to start the regular season, the men's lacrosse team traveled down to Kalamazoo to tussle with Western Michigan. The Panthers, looking for their first win, have never lost to the Broncos in nine meetings.

Saturday, March 16
Final Score: Davenport 16 – Western Michigan 12
Records: DU (1-4), WMU (2-1)
Location: Kalamazoo College

FALLING BEHIND

An unfortunate trend the Panthers have seen in the early stages of this season have been slow starts in the first quarter. Saturday afternoon was no different, as the Broncos stormed out of the gate with four goals in the first 15 minutes. Davenport was able to crack one of their own, but trailed by three heading into the second quarter.

STORMING BACK

The offense the Panthers had lacked all season thus far stormed to life in the second quarter, as DU filled the Western Michigan net with five goals. The Broncos were able to come back with three of their own, but Davenport was able to cut the lead to one heading into the second half.

Quarter number three was all Panthers, as Davenport's offense exploded for six more goals. Davenport's defense and goaltender Ben Stoklas also stepped up their play as well, only allowing two goals, and the Panthers would carry a three-goal lead into the final quarter.

SEALING THE DEAL

The Broncos tried to come back with three goals of their own in the fourth quarter, but Davenport put the game well out of reach with four in the final 15 minutes, giving the team their first win of the season with a 16-12 victory.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

Stoklas made 19 saves in the contest, earning his first ever win as a Panther. Connor Foster was big on the face-off dot for the Panthers, as he won 52 percent of his face-offs. Blake McDonald was the ultimate setup man on Saturday. With a goal and seven assists, the Six Nations, Ontario native led the team with eight points. Josh Jubenville continued to produce on the offensive end with three more goals, giving him 15 on the season. Jake Wilson may have had the best performance with five goals on the afternoon.

WHO'S NEXT?

The road warriors have another matchup this weekend against Central Michigan. The Chippewas are 1-1 this season, with a win over Elon and loss to Pitt this past weekend. DU is 7-0 all-time against the Chips dating back to 2013. The game will take place Sunday in Mount Pleasant at 5:30 p.m.
