WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Davenport baseball team salvaged the third game of the series against Malone to end their spring trip on Saturday. The Panthers currently have a 7-3 record and once again put a ton of runs on the board. The Pioneers however were just as potent but Davenport held on for a 10-9 win.
Davenport scored in each of the first six innings including four runs in the top of the fourth. The Panthers led 10-5 late in the contest when Malone scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth and threatened to take the lead. The Pioneers had the bases loaded with one out and freshman
Michael Lincoln took the mound. He rose to the occasion big time as he got a strikeout looking for the second out and then a fly out to left field on a full count to preserve the 10-9 lead.
Lincoln also came out in the bottom of the ninth and allowed a two-out single, but struck out the final batter to earn a save. Lincoln got the final five outs and allowed one hit with no walks and three strikeouts. Neither starting pitcher lasted into the fourth inning.
Cal Djuraskovic gave up five hits and four runs to go with four walks and three strikeouts. The Panthers got a huge break in the bottom of the third when Josh Haygood hit a home run with two outs. Haygood however missed home plate and was called out on appeal. That came back to haunt Malone in a one-run loss.
Braun Miller got the start and took the loss for Malone. In his three innings of work he allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Pete Zeimis earned the win for DU (1-0). He relieved Djuraskovic and went three innings and allowed just one hit and one run with three walks and a strikeout.
Jacob Buchberger went 3-for-5 with three RBI and hit his first home run of the year.
Nolan Bryant went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs and two RBI.
Kamrin Markwardt went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
Alex Huard and
Travis Harvey also drove in a run.
