Panthers split vs Wayne State during cold and windy evening

CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Panthers faced their toughest GLIAC opponent to date and split the twin bill against the Warriors of Wayne State. Davenport controlled game one and that resulted in a 3-2 win. The second game was filled with lots of runs for the Warriors and a handful of errors for the Davenport defense. The Warriors took game two by a score of 13-5. Mallory Teunissen was solid on the mound for DU in game one, she got victory number six on the year and didn't give up a single earned run.

The Panthers opened on the offensive side of the ball with a bang. Palazzolo led off the bottom of the first for DU and sent the softball over the right center part of the fence for a solo homer. Davenport held the 1-0 lead through three complete innings of play. Wayne State tied the game up in the fourth off a single through the left side. The Panthers scored a pair in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Palazzolo was given the RBI on the first run, she reached on a fielder's choice and Urban advanced from third to home. The lead was extended later in the inning when Crawford reached on a fielding error by the pitcher Koza scored. Davenport held onto their lead over the last two innings, only giving up a single run to the Warriors in the the sixth. Teunissen was solid on the mound for DU, not giving up a single earned run to the 17th ranked Warriors.

The script was slightly different in the second game of the doubleheader, with the Warriors having control throughout the majority of the game. Wayne State scored two runs in the second and another four in the third, putting the Panthers down six runs heading into the bottom of the third inning. Davenport created a giant shift in momentum, rolling off five runs during the bottom of the third. During the stretch Merice blasted a double down the left field line, clearing the bases and driving in three runs. After the five runs were score the Warriors subbed in their starting pitcher from game one and she struck out Rylie Kalina for the final out of the inning. She remained as the pitcher for Wayne State and the DU offense went stale over the next couple innings. Wayne State exploded for six runs in the fifth and eventually won 13-5 in five innings.

Davenport takes to the road tomorrow, Wednesday, to face Northwood for a doubleheader that starts at 3:00 p.m.
