Davenport overcomes slow start en route to 21-8 win over Lewis

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Panthers found themselves down early against the Flyers of Lewis University. Davenport, who was down 4-1 very early in the game, scored nine out of the next 10 goals to finish off the first half. Once DU got rolling offensively, it was a wrap. Ryann Deuel and Taylor Ries had monster game for Davenport, combining for 18 points in the game. The win helps DU improve their chances of making the GLIAC Tournament this year with only a couple games left in the regular season.

How It Happened
The Flyers, who came into the game with only one win this season, looked like a brand new team in the opening eight minutes of play. Lewis held a 4-1 lead over the Panthers 7:56 into the contest. Following the fourth goals by Lewis, the Panthers offense started to click and that was bad news for the Flyers defense and goalies. Davenport rattled off five straight goals, taking their first lead just over 15 minutes into the game. The Panthers run was stopped by an unassisted goal by Alyson Jines, who scored all four of her goals on her own, but DU quickly picked back up where they were. Davenport scored the final four goals of the half and held a 10-5 lead at halftime.

Davenport scored six unanswered goals in the second half, building up their lead to double digits quickly. The Panthers found plenty of scoring in Deuel, but also got some contributions from some unlikely sources. Addie Bethune and Payton Cardoza each scored their first goal of the season in the game, and Taylor Wood notched her second goal of the season. Once the Panthers increased their lead to double digits it stayed there for the remainder of the game. Davenport picked up the win and have more than doubled their win total from last season.
