Harvey Cycle Highlights 13-8 win at Grand Valley State

Travis Harvey becomes the first player in DU history to hit for the cycle going 5-for-5

ALLENDALE, Mich. – It was a historic day for Travis Harvey in Davenport's 13-8 win at Grand Valley State on Friday. Harvey became the first player in DU history to hit for the cycle finishing the game 5-for-5 with two singles, double, triple and home run. He drove in four runs and scored twice as the Panthers won their first true road game of the season and improved to 14-10 overall. Harvey tied the single-game record with five hits, which had been done seven times previously. Nolan Bryant also did something for the first time in his career. He hit two home runs and drove in three. Max Swan got the win, his first of the season, going five innings.

How It Happened: The series opener was a slugfest with 21 runs and 32 hits between the teams. Davenport fortunately scored 13 times including six runs off Grand Valley State starter Cade Cintorino. He lasted just four innings and allowed eight hits.

The Panthers broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the third and never trailed again. Jacob Buchberger singled with one out and he ended up starting the game 3-for-3. He took second on a wild pitch and then Bryant hit a home run to right field. Noah Marcoux walked with two outs and Jake Bozzo followed with a walk. Alex Huard singled to third base to load the bases. Harvey then singled to left for a pair of RBI.

Davenport built a 9-1 lead with four more runs in the top of the fifth. Marcoux doubled to right center to start the inning. Alex Licata came in to replace Cintorino and walked Bozzo. Huard laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners over. Harvey singled through the right side for a RBI and then Jimmy Filipski pinch hit for Dylan Watson. He drove home a run with a single to right. The Lakers shot themselves in the foot with back-to-back errors as Filipski and Hunter Ruhstorfer scored.

Grand Valley State scored the next three runs to make it 9-4 heading into the top of the eighth. DU put three more insurance runs on the board courtesy of a solo home run by Bryant and a two-run home run by Marcoux. GVSU scored twice in the eighth to make it 12-6. Harvey led off the ninth needing just a double to hit for the cycle and hustled his way into second on a shallow ball into center. The throw beat him to the bag but a creative slide avoided the tag and made history. Ruhstorfer drove him home with a groundout for the 13th run. The Lakers scored twice in the bottom of the ninth for the final of 13-8.

Game Notes: Evan Maize was the second man on the mound for DU and went two innings. He allowed just one hit and no runs. Duncan Gillett gave up two runs in one-third of an inning. Spencer Vainavicz finished the final 1.2 innings and gave up two runs with three strikeouts. Every starter had a hit for the Panthers. Marcoux, Buchberger, Bryant and Harvey all had multiple-hit games. Harvey has been on a tear over the last eight games batting .519 (14-27) with seven runs and 10 RBI.

On Deck: Davenport (14-10, 2-6 GLIAC) will play a doubleheader at Grand Valley State (8-17-1, 1-7-1 GLIAC) beginning on Saturday, April 6 at 1 p.m.
