ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Davenport baseball team was looking for the four-game sweep at Grand Valley State on Sunday, but came up short in an 11-6 loss to the Lakers. GVSU used a five-run third inning to take a 6-2 lead and never trailed after that.
Cal Djuraskovic got his seventh start of the season, but lasted three innings or less for the fifth straight start in the loss. Nick Shaw in relief got the win for Grand Valley State tossing 3.1 innings and allowing three hits and one run with three strikeouts. It was the first win of the season for Shaw (1-1).
How It Happened: The Panthers scored first in the top of the first courtesy of an RBI groundout to second by
Travis Harvey.
Jacob Buchberger scored on the play after singling to left to lead off the game. The Lakers answered in the bottom of the first. Parker Murdie singled to center to lead off and moved two bases on two wild pitches. Nathan Bonter then hit a two-out RBI single to short to tie it up.
Davenport took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third as Buchberger drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on a single by
Nolan Bryant. After a fielder's choice cut down Buchberger at the plate, Harvey hit a RBI single to left which scored Bryant from second base.
GVSU took control with five runs in the bottom of the third. A single by Connor Grice and back-to-back walks put runners on all three bases with one out.
Evan Maize took over on the mound for Djuraskovic and got a big strikeout for the second out. He then walked home a run on a full count to Drake Ellens. Chase Carpenter delivered the big hit with a bases-clearing hit for three RBI. Carpenter then scored the sixth run for the Lakers on a wild pitch.
Grand Valley State added two more runs in the fourth and another one in the sixth to lead 9-2. Davenport would score in each of the next three innings, but the Lakers did also.
Kamrin Markwardt had a RBI single in the seventh and the Panthers left the bases loaded. Bryant homered to right with two outs in the eighth. His solo shot was his fourth home run of the series and sixth of the season.
Trailing 11-4 heading into the ninth, the Panthers scored twice with two outs. Buchberger had a two-RBI double to right center which scored
Dylan Watson and
Cobe Huizenga.
Game Notes: Harvey finished 2-for-4 in the game with two RBI. He went 10-for-15 in the series with 10 RBI and six runs scored. Bryant went 3-for-5 with three runs scored on Sunday. His sixth home run of the season ties Buchberger for the team lead. He went 8-for-16 in the series with eight runs and eight RBI.
Michael Lincoln and
Pete Zeimis also got into the game on the mound. Lincoln tossed 2.2 innings and allowed two hits and a run. Zeimis finished the final two innings and allowed three hits and one earned run with a strikeout. The Panthers batted .343 in the four games against the Lakers and outscored them 36-21.
On Deck: Davenport (16-11) is set to play on the road on Tuesday, April 9 against Aquinas. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m. in Wyoming at Kimble Stadium. The Panthers defeated the Saints, 11-8, earlier this season on March 26 at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.
