Grand Rapids, Mich. - Prior to May 9, 2019, no Davenport University pitcher had ever struck out more than 13 batters in a single game. Enter senior right-hander,
Evan Marquardt, and our sixth-ranked moment from the 2018-19 athletics season.
In his final collegiate appearance, Marquardt fanned 18 Northwood batters and shattered the previous record of 13, which was set by
Grant Wolfram on April 27, 2018 against Ashland. Those 18 punchouts represented the second-highest strikeout total by a pitcher in all of NCAA Division II and they came in the first round of the GLIAC Tournament, no less.
The Midland native's complete-game gem not only improved his record to 9-1, but snapped Northwood's eight-game GLIAC Tournament winning streak as the Timberwolves had won the last two tournaments. Marquardt went the distance with 144 pitches, only two walks and a pair of earned runs allowed. That was his only appearance in the tournament, but he was still named to the GLIAC All-Tournament Team.
