Panthers downed on the road at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Davenport traveled to Annapolis for its first conference game of the season against #5 ranked Navy. The Midshipmen are one of the top teams in the country and came out fired up for a big match. It took eight minutes for the home team to get points on the board. Navy was very clinical in their start to the gam,e but ill discipline from Davenport gave Navy a myriad of possession and contributed to a heavy defensive load for Davenport in the first 20 minutes of the game.

Navy scored twice in the first quarter before David Afa'ese scored for Davenport from a nice set piece 20 minutes in. It was all Navy in the last part of the first half, taking advantage of the good field position they had gained to finish the half up 26 - 7. Davenport needed a big second half to have any chance of clawing their way back into the match, and claw back they did. It was a tremendously spirited display by the team that helped turn the tide in their favor. It took until the 60th minute before any points were scored. Enrique Carmona finished off a brilliant team play in the corner to bring it to 29 - 14. A penalty kick from Navy added three more points on their next possession. Davenport's Mat De Villiers kicked a penalty of his own soon after to bring the score to 32 - 17.

Davenport wasn't done yet and with the majority of possession managed to sustain pressure on Navy in the final stages of the match. Chipo Mupseo found some space from a kick return and made a brilliant individual run beating multiple Navy defenders to set Ralph Trirvanhu on his way to the try line to make it 32 - 22 with six minutes left on the clock. Davenport had certainly turned the tide in their favor in the final stages of the match, but couldn't breach the stout Navy defensive line again before the final siren. De Villiers made 3-of-4 conversions including one penalty kick.
