Season-opener slips out of the grasp of Davenport in the second half

CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Panthers took to the field for the first time this season, with numerous new faces seeing playing time. Davenport started five true freshmen in the first half and two others came off the bench. Despite controlling the tempo and possession of the ball throughout the game, the final score showed 1-0 in favor of Quincy. The Panthers had a couple opportunities to find the back of the net but just couldn't follow through.

HOW IT HAPPENED
It was evident the Panthers were excited to get on the field for their first official game of the year as the team committed multiple fouls in the opening 20 minutes of play. Freshman Sarah Possett is a physical player in the midfield and was carded in the 16th minute for some excessive contact. Davenport was possessing the ball well in the first half and had a few great looks at the net. Natalia Casiello, a freshman from Ontario, deked out a Hawks player and sent a gorgeous ball over the top to a streaking Katherine Steiner. Steiner raced to the ball and sent a shot towards the net, but Hawks keeper Emilee Autry got in front and stopped the shot. Davenport had a corner kick late in the half, but Madeleine Zayan couldn't connect with any teammates and the scored was tied 0-0 at halftime.

Quincy took advantage of a Davenport mistake early in the second half. A foul by DU in their own defensive third of the field gave a free kick to the Hawks. Quincy turned that free kick into a corner kick and that corner kick proved to be the difference in the game. Lauren Crane sent in a ball from the right corner and Maddie Bauer was waiting for the ball by the far post, she got her head on the ball and sent it into the back of the net. The Panthers continued to dominate the possession game. However, opportunities came and passed for DU to score. Over the final 10 minutes of the game, Davenport couldn't record a shot and the final seconds ticked away before an equalizer was found.
