Stellar Second Half Leads Panthers Past Eagles

ASHLAND, Ohio - The Davenport University men's basketball team outscored Ashland by 15, 37-22, in the second half en route to a 61-48 victory in Ohio on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers held the Eagles to their lowest point total in nearly six years since they scored that many at Findlay on Jan. 23, 2014.

Davenport has now won three games in a row and five of the last six to improve to 12-5 overall and get above the .500 mark in GLIAC play at 4-3. On the other side, Ashland fell below that mark overall for the first time this season at 7-8 including 0-7 in league action.

Tafari Beckford finished with a second-consecutive double-double and third of the season thanks to 10 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and a steal. Beckford has accounted for 10 or more boards in a game five times this season and is bringing down 6.7 per contest, which is tied for 10th in the conference. Also scoring in double-figures for the Panthers were Evan Hines with 12 and Chris Rollins with 11. Janeau Joubert also notched three assists while he and Rollins each racked up four steals.

The Panthers held the Eagles to just 32.6 percent (15-for-46) shooting from the field, the lowest allowed by Davenport against a Division II opponent this season. Thanks to Davenport's second-half adjustments, Ashland mustered just 22 points on 28 percent (7-for-25) from the floor in those 20 minutes.

Davenport led by as many as 10 in the early going when it was 19-9 with just under 10 minutes to play until the halftime buzzer and five different players accounted for those 19 points. However, from there until the intermission, the Eagles outscored the Panthers by 12, 17-5, and went into the locker room up two, 26-24. Davenport shot just 32 percent (8-for-25) in the first half compared to a red-hot 60 percent (15-for-25) mark in the second.

Ashland wouldn't lead again as Hines made a layup and cashed a three to put Davenport back on top just 37 seconds into the second half. The Panthers would go on to lead by as many as 15, 59-44, in the second half before winning it by the 13-point margin.
