The summer of 2019 was very memorable for three current men's lacrosse team members. Adam Smellie, Jimmy Johnston and Jordan Caskenette accomplished something believed to be the only time it has happened. The trio each were able to win a championship in their respective junior leagues in Canada during the same summer and then go on to play on the same team collegiately. Adam and Jordan were on the Davenport squad a year ago and now Jimmy has joined them after transferring from Young Harris in Georgia.
Jordan and Adam had their first season with the DU program cut short due to COVID-19 in 2020, but in a brief sample size of games, they both ranked in the top 5 in points.
Jordan played for a Junior A team by the name of Orangeville Northmen and they captured the Minto Cup championship for the first time in seven years in 2019. The 2019 Northmen went 3-0 in group play before sweeping the championship series, 3-0. Orangeville only trailed for a total of 23:07 of the possible 360 minutes of all six games.
Jimmy suited up for the record-setting Calgary Shamrocks in the Junior B circuit. The Shamrocks took home the Founders Cup and defeated the Six Nations Rebels in the Founders Cup championship, becoming the first team outside of Ontario to win the championship in 10 years.
Adam went along on a great journey with the Whitby Warriors in the Junior C ranks. They captured their first Meredith Cup as a club and were the first team in Junior C history to go undefeated. They had a regular season record of 16-0 and would go on to sweep each team in the tournament to finish the year 26-0.
"Adam, Jimmy, and Jordan are competitive individuals that want to be elite," said head coach Chris Esquivel. "They demonstrate that attitude in everything they do. All three are tremendous workers in the classroom, the weight room, and on the field. I am excited to watch them compete together this spring."
