Panthers Rally Late to Edge Cardinals

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Davenport trailed Saginaw Valley State by as many as 10, 64-54, with under eight minutes to play on Saturday afternoon on the road. From there until the final buzzer, the Panthers outscored the Cardinals by 20, 30-10, to win their third game in a row, 84-74.

With their fifth win in the last six games, the Panthers improved to 19-8 overall and 11-6 in GLIAC play. Davenport is still tied with Michigan Tech (17-8, 11-6 GLIAC) for third in the league and those two teams will see each other on Thursday night at 7:30 in Houghton.

Saturday, Evan Hines scored a team-high 21 points, two off his career high, for his third 20-point effort of the season and first since Dec. 10. Also scoring in double-figures for Davenport were Chris Rollins (18), Robbie Bramhill (17) and Chris Pearl (13). Tafari Beckford (9 points, 10 rebounds) was one board shy of his fifth double-double while Pearl came within two rebounds of his third. Rollins and Pearl each had three assists, Alonzo Chatman notched the team's lone block and Rollins also had two steals.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair that saw eight ties and 11 lead changes. Neither team led by more than four points and Saginaw Valley State was up by one at the break, 37-36. Under three minutes into the second half, the Cardinals' Malik Ellison hit a jumper to give his team the lead, 42-41. Aside from a tie at 44-44, the home team went on to push its lead to 10, 64-54, before Davenport stormed all the way back and won it with the 30-10 spurt.

Davenport out-rebounded Saginaw Valley by 16, 42-26, including 13-1 on the offensive glass. That effort led to a dominant 13-0 advantage in second-chance points for the Panthers. For the season, Davenport improved to 7-0 when it brings down 40 or more boards. The Panthers also dominated in bench scoring (25-10) and points in the paint (32-16). Davenport turned the ball over just eight times, its first game with fewer than 10 since Jan. 23.
