GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - When Davenport left Ashland after a 61-48 win back on Jan. 11, the Eagles were 7-8 overall, 0-7 in GLIAC play and had lost eight of their last nine games. It's fair to say Davenport saw a different Ashland team on Thursday night inside the DU Student Center. The Eagles won the rematch, 66-56, and held the Panthers to just 37.9 percent shooting from the field to pick up a sixth victory in their last seven games.
Janeau Joubert was a major bright spot for Davenport as he recorded new career highs in points (24) and field goals made (10-of-15) while tying his personal best in three-pointers made (4-of-7). Joubert also notched five rebounds, two assists and a steal in his 36 minutes on the court while
Evan Hines scored in double-figures as well with 14 to go with a pair of dimes. The Panthers' other leaders included
Tafari Beckford with six boards,
Alonzo Chatman with two blocks and
Robbie Bramhill with two steals.
Chris Rollins (0-of-5 FG) was held scoreless for just the second time in his Davenport career (Lincoln Memorial - Nov. 2).
Ashland scored the game's first 19 points before Hines finally got Davenport on the board with a layup at the 14:39 mark. That deuce sparked a 10-0 run for the Panthers, eight of which came from Hines, before the Eagles responded with eight-straight points of their own to go back up by 17, 27-10, at the 8:16 mark. The closest Davenport could get the rest of the half was 11, 34-23, before the halftime deficit of 13, 36-23. In the second half, the Panthers were able to cut it to nine on four different occasions, but could never get over that hump.
Davenport's 56 points represented its second-lowest output of the season and worst at home. The Panthers' 37.9 field goal percent is tied for the third lowest overall and is even with Northern Michigan for the lowest mark in GLIAC play this season. The Panthers lost for just the second time all season (11-2) when they out-rebound their opponent as they brought down 37 boards to the Eagles' 35.
Next up, Davenport will host Wayne State (4-14, 1-13 GLIAC) for Senior Day on Saturday and the opening tip is set for approximately 3 p.m.
