GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport men's DI hockey club had an abrupt end to the GLCHL Tournament in the semifinals on Friday afternoon. The home ice advantage did not seem to matter in a 3-1 loss to Calvin. The second-seeded Panthers lost for the first time against the third-seeded Knights in 11 games. The Panthers also swept both games to end the regular season last weekend.
The Panthers struck first at 6:24 of the opening period. Adam Goudelock scored from the left slot as Calvin netminder Darin Fox looked to initially make the pad save. Jason Cohen and Chris Corgan had the assists for the Panthers. Two minutes later the Knights found the back of the net to even it up at 1-1. The goal came from Jacob Siebenga with the assists from Christian Gums and Ian Elkins. Siebenga drove the net and Gums had a near perfect pass in stride right on the tape of his stick. For the rest of the period both teams went toe-to-toe in a fast-paced contest.
In the second period, the Knights came out with intensity looking to put the Panthers on their heels. About five minutes into the frame, the Knights took the lead with a power play goal from Graham Kormash with the assists from Siebenga and Josh Hartlein. Kormash swept the puck on a tough angle and beat Jason Rhynold. The shots on goal were 19 for each side after two periods.
In the third period it looked like Calvin would take a two-goal lead, but a goal was disallowed. About five minutes into the final period, the Knights took that two-goal lead with a goal from Siebenga who virtually batted the puck out of mid-air in the crease from behind the net. Jared Virtanen, the team's leading scorer set up the play and had an assist. The Panthers had a great chance to cut the deficit to one goal eight minutes into the period on a penalty shot. Cohen took it and Fox made a game-changing save to preserve a 3-1 advantage. DU kept peppering the Knight goaltender but he stood tall. Fox made 31 saves on the day.Â
The Panthers will look to regroup and turn the page having two weeks off before the ACHA Division I national tournament. DU (18-12) will face-off with Michigan-Dearborn in their first game on Saturday, March 21 at 2:30 p.m. central time in Frisco, Texas.
